Leith Links lights up the Sundowners 5K opener

Sundowners 5K Series Leith Links 1/3

Soggy Starts and Fast Feet

Soggy starts and fast feet set the tone for the opening night of this year's Sundowners 5K Series at Leith Links on 1 July, as the event went 'on tour' in fine style, even if the weather had other ideas.

A lively crowd of 140 runners turned out to kick things off, braving a slightly soggy evening for a brilliant community atmosphere. The field was impressively balanced, with a near-even split between male and female participants, while 8 under-18s and 8 over-60s, including an octogenarian, proved once again that the Sundowners spirit really is for everyone.

At the front of the pack, records tumbled. Joshua McKenny of Lancaster University laid down a stunning marker with a winning time of 16:07, setting a new course record that will stand as the one to chase. On the women's side, Nadin Walti delivered a superb run in 19:33, also claiming a new course record -made all the more impressive given the wet underfoot conditions and the course's many twists and turns.

An event like this doesn't happen by chance, and a huge thank you goes to everyone who helped bring the evening together. Earth in Common cafe hosted us and provided prizes, while Brian Pendreigh created the route that kept runners on their toes throughout. Corstorphine First Aid were on hand for safety, and The Edinburgh Minute helped spread the word. Special recognition goes to the marshals, who guided runners safely through every turn, and to Westwoods Health Club, who provided a warm-up and generously offered day passes for post-race recovery.

One down, two to go — the Sundowners 5K Series is already looking ahead to its next two adventures. Next up: Fettes College on 26 August, followed by Inverleith Park on 9 September. Expect the same warm welcome, gorgeous routes, and unmistakable Sundowners buzz as the series races toward its grand finale.
