Cherry Blossom 5K Meadows Magic
Pink Weather Party
Tuesday 12 May saw The Meadows in Edinburgh transformed into a burst of pink energy as 111 runners lined up for the Cherry Blossom 5K. With a mix of bright race kit, determined faces, and a hint of seasonal celebration, the lunchtime event delivered everything from fast finishes to unexpected weather theatrics.
What began under typical spring conditions quickly turned into a shifting stage of rain, hail, and wind, only for the skies to clear again just as suddenly. The conditions added an extra layer of challenge, but spirits stayed high throughout as runners powered around the course and back to the finish line.
At the end of the effort came the well earned rewards. Finishers were greeted with drinks and a slice of pink marshmallow cake, alongside Cherry Blossom inspired marshmallow bites freshly baked by Susie, which quickly became a highlight of the day’s celebrations.
Community effort at the heart of the event
As always, the event was made possible by the dedicated team of marshals who guided runners safely around the busy Meadows course. Issy, Richard, Alan, Kuan, Charlie, Brian and John provided vital support at every turn, helping to keep the race flowing smoothly from start to finish.
Their presence ensured runners could focus fully on their performance while navigating one of Edinburgh’s most popular running locations.
Charity impact with every step
This month’s event supported Simpsons Special Care Baby Unit, raising £150 through entry donations. The charity provides vital support for premature and sick babies and their families, working alongside the specialist neonatal team at the Simpson Neonatal Unit in Edinburgh.
The day carried a particularly personal resonance, with moments shared at prize giving that connected runners directly to the cause. Among them was Fraser Christie, a consultant in the neonatal unit, and Rory Sandison, the first senior male finisher, who had himself been cared for there as a baby. Another runner also shared a powerful personal link, with a photograph of her son who was born prematurely and supported by the unit.
These stories brought a deeper meaning to the race, reminding everyone of the wider impact behind the fundraising effort.
Strong performances across the field
The competitive edge was strong throughout the field, with standout performances across all categories. Rory Sandison led the senior men home in 15:59, while Helena Kruder topped the senior women’s field in 22:09. Age category wins saw impressive depth across veteran and junior runners, reflecting the inclusive and competitive spirit of the event. Full results are now available.
Looking ahead
With spring energy still in the air, runners are already being invited to return for the next instalment of the Meadows series in October. Until then, the Cherry Blossom 5K leaves behind a trail of fast times, community spirit, and a little pink sweetness that perfectly matched the theme of the day.
